Rocco Turino
26.01.02-17.02.02
Private View: 25 January 2002, 7.00-9.00 pm
One of Rocco Turino's earlier works, 'Bed Ball', is a six foot sphere of mattress ticking.
It is an inflated shell made from domestic material of a design which is functional almost
to the point of invisibility. 'Bed Ball' has acted as the impetus for subsequent works such
as the series 'Gloves'.
In 'Gloves' Turino explores the casting process using the finite of a limited production
time imposed by his chosen material, with the infinite of chance and serendipity. Turino
uses his hands to form plaster filled latex gloves into shape, maintaining his grip until
the plaster has set. The sculptural object is literally defined by the artist's hands which
leave their impression on the
setting material and form the negative space. The plaster behaves in response to this action.
Once removed, the artist's hands can be replaced and we find that the object fits 'like a
glove'.
Rocco Turino is a Canadian Artist based in London for the past 2 years. He has shown in the
US and Cananda. This is his first exhibition in the UK.
