Jimmy Robert

7.9.02-29.9.02

Private View: 6 September 2002, 7.00-9.00 pm

brown leatherette is a new work by Jimmy Robert featuring a performance shot on film and presented in the gallery as a 16mm projection. This short silent film portrays a lithe male figure dressed in leather slowly crawling across the frame.
As the scene for an act of intense intimacy and solitude, the spectacular panoramic view produces a peculiar air of remoteness between the solitary figure and the viewer. The windows through which we witness the scene, not only frame the action, but reflect the night time skyline, creating further spatial illusions. The deadpan camera affects a stillness which is countered by the figure¹s slow motion. In brown leatherette, what appears to be a simple, if curious act, on closer inspection begins to elicit a series of visual and conceptual conundrums.

To coincide with brown leatherette Jimmy Robert has also produced a 16 page bookwork Pierre, Paul, Jacques, Tom, Dick and Harry (exhibition price £3.00).

Both projects have been commissioned by Autograph (abp) in collaboration with Platform.

Jimmy Robert was born in France in 1975. He studied at Goldsmiths College (199699) and currently lives and works in London.

The gallery is open Thursday to Sunday 12 - 6pm or by appointment.
